When You Need An Immigration Attorney

01.27.2010 · Posted in attorneys - lawyers 1

Moving is stressful. Moving countries is complex, stressful, and if you fail to do the paperwork properly the consequences can be disastrous to you and your family. While there are suddenly tons of immigration law websites popping up all over, the sites never have the most current law information and they usually have a ‘keep out the foreigners’ tone. Be wary of immigration consultants. They are practicing law without a license to do so, basically. So an immigration lawyer is the way to go. Your case is unique with unique factors which a trained attorney will be able to use to your benefit.

There are over 7,500 immigration lawyers in the United States today, choosing one can be a daunting task. Contacting the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) will give you some places to start with. Also the state’s bar association will be able to help you with some names also, and let you know that they are in good standing.

Once you have the numbers of a few immigration attorneys call around and see if they are taking on new clients. For those that are taking new clients ask about their fees. Most immigration attorneys work on a flat fee, so you can comparison shop. Do not automatically choose the lawyer with the lowest fee, chances are that they are not factoring in all the aspects of your case in their initial estimation. Once you find a price range that you are comfortable with you should now spend some time getting to know some important f acts about your potential lawyers.

Have they ever been through any disciplinary actions? What is their community reputation? Do they have client references? Always contact the references to make sure the lawyer’s skills are thought highly of. Is immigration law their only specialty? How many years have they been specializing in immigration law? Who else, such as paralegals, will be handling your case? You need to ask that there are no conflicts of interest in your case. Finally ask the lawyer how long it will typically take them to return a phone call or an email to you. The biggest complaint against lawyers today has nothing to do with their quality of work. It is that they do not communicate properly. Due to the amount of money you are spending on their services you have every right to expect that your phone calls and emails be returned in a timely fashion.
