Firefighter Duties and Responsibilities
A modern day firefighter is more a jack-of-all-trades than is the traditional image of a firefighter. Today firefighters all over the country are individuals who are trained and certified in a number of specialized fields relating to firefighting, this stems from a need to have a firefighter prepared to face any emergency, since firefighters are essentially the “first responders” to any scene of emergency. Although one cannot hope to list and contain any and all duties that a firefighter performs, there are some that are elementary and form the basis for all firefighter services:
The Firefighter Creed: (Source: www.ycfd5.com)“When I am called to duty God
Wherever flames may rage
Give me strength to save a Life
Whatever be its age”
Every firefighter past, present or future is entrusted with protecting human lives! There is no greater service in life than a life that is spent serving humanity; most firefighters have taken this sentiment to heart and their actions reflect it accordingly. Indeed firefighters are heroes, irrespective of where they are or whom they may be, Firefighter are heroes! They run into the burning building when everyone else is running out, they give you hope when you have none for yourself, they are proud and they are strong, they fight for our lives and if need be, they will lay down their lives for us, that is a firefighter, remember these words well, for they form the basis of all firefighter services and every firefighter is expected to hold this sentiment at heart.
EMT (Emergency Medical Technician)Firefighters today have to respond to a multitude of emergency calls and fact is that most of these calls, almost 80% statistically speaking, relate to a medical nature. This means that the new age firefighter is also a trained and knowledgeable professional in the various EMT services that are required at the scene of emergency. As such the majority of all firefighters in active duty today and majority of all prospective recruits are required to hold a basic level certification at minimum in EMT services, with more and more individuals getting certified in still higher levels such as Paramedic services. It is also worth considering for an individual who wishes to have a probability of being successfully selected.
A friend in needMost firefighters never know who it is they are called in to protect or save, however once a victim has been successfully rescued the first and most likely only contact that victim will have for several moments is with the firefighter themselves. As such it becomes important that all firefighters be trained or atleast have knowledge in dealing with victims who are suffering from post traumatic shock or hysteria resulting from their ordeal. The firefighter should be sympathetic and compassionate to their fellow human being and one will find that this is in fact the greatest duty that a firefighter owes to his service.
If one finds herself/himself conflicted about whether or not to become a firefighter, ask yourself this simple question…
“Do I wish to watch over the well-being of my fellow human being?” if your answer is in the affirmative to the above question, then you are someone who is eligible to become a firefighter.
