First Aid Basics: Animal Attacks and Children (Part 1)
When I was three years old I was a highly active little boy. Like most little boys, I was into anything and everything. Children, (especially little boys) are explorers. They want to know more about their world and can be pretty fearless with their exploration. I wasn’t taught be afraid of animals so as far as i was concerned I had no reason to fear them. I found a little poodle outside and wanted to play with the dog. unfortunately for me the dog did not want to play. I ended up having my face chewed up and had to go to the emergency room. I only remember reaching for the dog in the bushes and then waking up in the hospital with my mom. I know we were being discharged because we didn’t stay very long and their were no doctors or nurses attending to me.
I have not idea what my parents did but it worked out. I now have children of my own, but can remember emergencies with them that caused me some stress. Anytime your kids are hurt it’s going to be an unpleasant experience. Having good solid basic first aid training can help you to understand how to respond to emergencies correctly and most effectively. Although most people attending these courses do so because they need certification, the reality is that anyone can benefit by having the training.
Emergencies come unexpectedly and in a variety of different ways. Medical emergencies are very different then trauma and they are handled differently. In either case, training provides you a foundation to handle these situation in the best manner. Often those who are first on the scene of an emergency can make the difference in the overall outcome by the care they provide.
